You might see these harmless sharks usually in the late spring and summer anywhere around the coasts of South West England but your best chances are the east coast of the Lizard Peninsula, and on ferry crossings to Lundy Island and the Isles of Scilly.
As the second biggest fish in the sea, they feed on the smallest animals. Swimming near the surface, mouth agape they filter sea water through their gills. Your first sighting is likely to be of their black dorsal and tail fins.
Because they feed in plankton-rich water, Basking Sharks are often accompanied by other animals using the same food supply. These might include seabirds, marine turtles and Ocean Sunfish.
