Fremington Quay Visitor Centre - on the Tarka Trail
The Fremington Quay Visitor Centre - on the Tarka Trail was important in the 19th and early 20th centuries for import and export of china clay, coal and other minerals all over the world. The thriving railway station fell into decline in the 1960s when the rail link was closed. On the site of the old railway station a replica station has been built, housing a visitor centre, café and restaurant and a signal box that allows observation of the varied wildlife. The site is now an RSPB reserve. Many rare species of birds are to be found here and seals are to be seen at high tide. There are permanent displays of Fremington's past, including the rare Fishley pottery, as well as regularly changing exhibitions.
The quay is accessed by a resurfaced road running along the side of the estuary. A popular place for fishermen, it has a wonderful sense of isolation, with stunning views across the estuary.
