Speke's Mill Mouth

Add your information to this page

Speke's mill mouth - a twenty minute walk south of Hartland Quay brings you to Speke's Mill Mouth with its beautiful waterfall and long curving beach. Access to the beach via steps gives you sandy stretches at low tide running down to the shore.

Other beaches include:

MOUTH MILL COVE - a free National Trust car park at Brownsham leads to a pretty one mile woodland walk down to Mouth Mill, a very quiet location ominated by Black Church Rock with its two vast windows carved out by the Coast Path to either Clovelly north or Hartland Point south.

Peppercombe - a delightful walk from Horns Cross through woodland to possibly the quietest and most secluded beach in the area.

DUCKPOOL - small free car park with sandy beach at low tide. Good starting point for coastpath walk south to Sandymouth. Lovely views south to Trevose Head

SANDYMOUTH - National Trust owned with large car park and lovely tea room. The large sandy beach has lifeguard cover during the holiday season and is popular with surfers. Breathtaking views south to Bude and Trevose Head.

Welcombe Mouth - a secluded and quiet bay located at the end of a rough unmade road. A small car park gives access to one of the loveliest beaches near Hartland. Sandy from mid-tide onwards it also offers some excellent rock pools.

NORTHAM BURROWS COUNTRY PARK - the park covers 263 hectares of sand dunes, salt marsh and pasture providing important habitats for wildlife. There are 1.5 miles of sandy beach protected by a ridge of huge pebbles. The visitor centre is open from Easter to September with excellent hands-on activities for children explaining the ecology of the sea and surrounding area.

Instow — large safe sandy beach ideal for young children to paddle in and play amongst the sand dunes. Easy free parking with ferry in season across to Appledore. Wonderful views across the estuary to Northam and Braunton Burrows.

WATERFALLS - the Hartland Peninsula has many stunning waterfalls cascading on to pebbled foreshores, tumbling beneath bridges or meandering their way through yet another delightful valley towards the sea. Wargery, Blegberry, Blagdon and Beckland but by far the most impressive and possibly the finest in the South West must be the waterfall at Speke's Mill Mouth where Milford Water enters the sea.

Speke’s Mill Mouth with its beautiful waterfall and long curving beach.

Access to the beach via steps gives you sandy stretches at low tide running down to the shore.

Surfers like to visit Spekes for its renowned reef brake, yet it remains peaceful and quiet even at the height of summer.
